If your water supply lacks fluoride, it becomes important that you provide it to your child by oral supplements. Consult your doctor if your kid needs it. Your dentist will provide fluoride varnish and clean their teeth. It should be noted that too much fluoride is bad for your kid’s health. It causes stains on their teeth. Be careful that your kid doesn’t swallow fluoride. If you’re providing supplements, follow its instructions. 

Brushing And Flossing 

You should begin your ward’s oral hygiene from their early years. When your kid turns one or two years old, start using a child-size soft toothbrush. Brush your kid’s teeth twice every day. You can add a small amount of toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride in it. When your kids reach an age when they can spit out toothpaste, you can switch to one with fluoride. Teach your kid to properly brush all the areas including teeth, tongue, and gums. 

You will probably need to guide and help to brush till your kid is 7 to 8 years of age. They can start using adult-sized toothbrushes around this time. Flossing is as important. Tell your kid to floss once every day. Buy a floss with a handle to make it easier. Teach your kid to brush it on the tongue. This reduces bacteria. Make sure your kid also brushes their teeth before bedtime, to clean up the day’s drinking and eating. 

Importance of a healthy diet 

Children who consume a considerable amount of sugary drinks and foods are prone to cavities. It becomes important to plan a healthy diet. Cut short sugar. Don’t let your kid consume a lot of sweetened drinks, soda, or fruit juice. If your kid consumes sugar, make them brush their teeth right after. 

Chewing gum has benefited only if your kid is old enough to not swallow it. It strengthens the jaw, helps produce saliva, freshens breath, washes away food bits, and balances acid that causes tooth decay. Avoid sugary gums. Switch to sugar-free gums.

When to see a dentist?

Kids should visit their dentist around their first birthday, recommends the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Consult pediatric dentists that are experts in children’s oral health. If you take your child to the dentist when he or she is young, it will make them comfortable from an early age. It also makes ground for regular dental checkups and good habits.
