What Do You Need To Build A DIY Water Filter?

Water contains minerals, chemicals, and other impure elements that you definitely don’t want to consume. That’s why you need a water filter that gives you pure water at the end of the process. Water can also contain traces from chlorine, pesticides, bacteria, viruses, etc. which you must eliminate before consuming. Using a DIY water filter can help you eliminate all such elements at ease.

To make a DIY water filter at home, you will need a number of things including charcoal, piece of cloth, fine grit, coarse grit, gravel, knife, and plastic water bottles.

How To Create The DIY Water Filter?

Here you will find the step-by-step guide to create the DIY water filter. Once you have all the ingredients mentioned above, you can start making your water filter.

Step 1: Cutting The Bottom of The Plastic Bottle: The first step is to cut the bottom part of the plastic bottle out using the knife. This is done so that you can easily insert all the materials inside it. You will also have to make a small hole on the bottle cap so that you can get the filtered water at ease.

Step 2: Putting Cloth Inside The Plastic Bottle: At the second stage, you have to insert a piece of cotton cloth into the plastic bottle. Make sure you fold it in order to make a small cup shape out of it. This will be the last layer of the filter. You can use your knife to properly place the cloth inside the bottle.

Step 3: Crushing The Charcoal Into Tiny Bits: The third step is to crush the charcoal into tiny bits. You can easily do this by wrapping the charcoal in a piece of cloth and then crushing it with the handle of your knife. The idea here is to have fine granules of charcoal so that the activated carbon in it can easily trap the pollutants. Charcoal also plays a key role in eliminating bad odor or taste in contaminated water.

Step 4: Putting Charcoal and Sand Inside The Bottle: Now it is time to pack the crushed charcoal and sand into the plastic bottle. First, you should pack the plastic bottle with crushed charcoal and then add a layer of coarse sand along with gravel to it. Do this in a particular order to be able to prevent sands and charcoal from floating.

Step 5: Water Filtration is Ready: The fifth step is to check whether your water filtration system is working or not. All you have to do is to pour the water into the filter and wait till it trickles down through the filter. Many consider that filtration is not enough to eliminate the harmful particles from water. That’s why many prefer boiling water over filtering it.

Drinking contaminated water can cause severe health problems including diarrhea, vomiting, etc. It can also lead to several water-borne diseases. So, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you will have to survive, it is better to filter water before drinking it.
